Comment

Jesus’ response to the love of a sinful woman had two elements. The first was a declaration that her sins were forgiven – a shocking thing to say. It was shocking because the woman was notorious, with many sins to her name – how could she be forgiven all that? Also she’d done nothing to make amends except cry and waste expensive perfume on his feet. But most of all it was shocking because only God has the right and authority to forgive sins.

The other element was a declaration that the woman’s faith had saved her. What prompted that statement? The woman hadn’t said anything! But her actions spoke volumes. Her tears spoke of repentance, and her sorrow for the life she had led. Her washing and anointing of Jesus’ feet showed that she believed Jesus had done something amazing for her, something for which she was more grateful than words could say. What do you think that could be?
